Assemblies are held every Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. Half of the school meets one week, and the other half meets the next. In Assembly, one class leads in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and singing the patriotic song. Each student in the leading class memorizes information about the prominent historical figure being studied that week, then uses the microphone and their public speaking skills to give their presentations to the audience. Another class contributes to the Assembly by reciting a poem, performing a skit, or emphasizing in some way the character trait being studied. Studying important historical figures is a requirement in meeting Arizona State Standards. Examples of important individuals in history that we study include: The Founding Fathers of our nation; famous musical composers; prominent sports figures who qualify as role models; philanthropists and humanitarians; and others who have made significant contributions for the benefit of our nation or for humanity. The entire school took a field trip to the Phoenix Symphony to kick off the season for composers, then had members of the Phoenix Symphony and other professional musicians give presentations at assembly. Our students have visited local art museums and museum docents came to our assemblies afterward to inspire the children to explore their artistic abilities. We invite outside speakers or groups to come and give presentations about their areas of expertise, such as water safety, fire safety, dental hygiene and many other community services. Parents are always invited to attend Assemblies, and are especially encouraged to come when their child’s class is performing. The basketball court is opened for extra parking at 8:10 a.m., but should be cleared of all vehicles by 9:00 a.m. for the P.E. classes. Please sign in at the front desk. For Special Assemblies, the entire student body is divided into two groups, usually by age level, and our guests present the same program to both groups.
Several sessions of activities are offered on campus after school for a fee. Students have the opportunity throughout the year to participate at different levels.
